Gertrude Ann Auth

AUTH, Gertrude Ann, (nee Wallace), age 86, of Old Tappan and more recently of Toms River NJ died on August 31, 2014, at the John-Paul II Rehabilitation Facility and Nursing Home, in Danbury CT  Born in New York City, the daughter of  David and Honora (Donlon) Wallace, she was a New Jersey resident for 62 years.

Gertrude was a graduate of St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, Bronx, NY and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School.  She worked as a secretary at the Revere Copper and Brass Company in New York City.

On September 9, 1950, Gertrude married William J. Auth and began a career as a wife, mother of four children, and homemaker.  The couple moved to Old Tappan in February of 1956 and resided there until they retired to Toms River, NJ in 1991. While a resident of Old Tappan, she served her community as a grammar school Class Mother, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a member of the Old Tappan Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary.  Gertrude was always proud of the fact that during the construction of the Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan, she and her good friend Isobel Elliker prevented the construction crew from bull-dozing down the largest tree on the tract of land that became the girl’s softball field.  That giant pine tree still stands there today providing a nice piece of shade behind the diamond.

Gertrude was pre-deceased by her husband, Bill on December 24, 2013, and by her sister Marguerite Fox and brother George Wallace. She is survived by her children, William Jr., Thomas and his wife Marcia, Robert and wife Elsa and Nancy Schaub and her husband Warren.  Gertrude is also survived by her brother Frank Wallace, and her grand children Katherine Schaub, Eileen Schaub, and Maxwell-David Auth.

The family will receive visitors on November 7 from 3-5 PM and from 7-9 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Avenue, Northvale, NJ.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in her name to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
