Herbert George Flavell


Herbert George Flavell, 86, of Hallstead, PA, formerly of Kearny, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.  Beloved husband of the late Eleanor for 57 years.  Devoted father and father-in-law of Kathleen and Briant Bodrato of Northvale, Karen and Patrick Flavell-Boney of Northvale, Cynthia and the late John Demmer of Northvale, and Michael Flavell and Robert Flavell, both of Hallstead, PA.  Cherished grandfather of Nicole and her husband Shawn, Meghan and her husband Michael, Shawn, Shane, Ashley, Jordan, Erin, Christopher, and Jenna.  Adored great-grandfather of Andrew, Tyler, Shaelynn, Avelynn, Alyonna, Matthew, and Mikayla.  Dearest brother of Marion Dekoyer, George Flavell, Claire Flavell, and the late Dorothy Lowrey and Margaret Moore.Herbert was a USMC and US Army veteran of the Korean War. Marie Garro


Marie Garro (nee Mezzacappa), 81, of Blauvelt since 1968, passed away at home on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Salvatore “Sonny” Garro. Beloved mother of John Garro of Blauvelt and Marc Garro and his wife Tracy of Blauvelt. Cherished grandmother of Anthony and wife Marissa and Taylor. Dearest sister of Angela Santorelli and husband Sal, Ann Mezzacappa, Anthony Mezzacappa and wife Robin and the late Nicholas and Joseph.

Edwin V. Westman

Edwin “Ed” V. Westman of Sparkill, NY passed away peacefully on January 5th, 2020. He was 81 years old. Born on June 23rd, 1938 and raised in The Bronx, he was the son of Anna Johnson and stepson of Artie Johnson. In 1956, he graduated from Evander Childs High School and went on to work for Verizon. Ed served in the US Army from 1958 through 1964. In 1964, he joined the New York City Police Department and retired 20 years later, in 1984. He then went back to finish his career with Verizon, where he retired from the company. His post-retirement days were spent driving the school bus for his local school district.

Ed was married to Amelia “Millie” (Clark) Westman for 45 years until her death in 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Judy DiToma and they shared an adventurous 15 years.

Ed is also survived by his two sons, Clifford, wife Mary; and Glenn, partner Joan. Ed has nine grandchildren: Cassie; GySgt USMC Max, wife Colby; Patrick; Taylor; Fiona; Cole; Kyle; and Kate.  He also has a great-grandchild on the way.

Ed was a true outdoorsman and loved to hunt. He spent many weekends hunting in the Catskills with his two sons. An avid sailor, Ed was a dedicated member of the Hook Mountain Yacht Club, where he was an award-winning sailboat racer.

When he wasn’t on his sailboat or hanging out at the boat club, you could find him in the kitchen, probably cooking up a mean Seafood Fettuccini. Known by many as “Chef Ed,” he loved spending time roaming the grocery store aisles.

A longtime resident of Sparkill, Ed volunteered with the Sparkill Volunteer Fire Company. He was also an active member of the Pearl River Gun Club; the American Legion; and the Pearl River United Methodist Church.

He taught his children and grandchildren to work hard, be respectful and honor the service of others. Ed will be missed dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11th, 2020 at Pearl River United Methodist Church, 130 Franklin Avenue, Pearl River, New York 10965.

Clara Bordador

Clara Bordador, 90, of Norwood, NJ, passed away with her loving family at her side on Friday, January 3, 2020.  She was the cherished mother of Editha McHugh and her husband Keith of Norwood.  Proud grandmother of Christina Quagliana and her husband Michael and Ryan McHugh and his wife Bernadette Gorczyca and loving great-grandmother of Evan and Leah Quagliana . Dearest sister of Nena, Pining and the late Dulce and Ety.

Clara was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception RC Church, Norwood.

Lorraine Mould

Lorraine Mould, 90, of Northvale, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2019. Lorraine was born in Cliffside Park, NJ on January 4, 1929. She was formerly employed with Irving Trust Bank, NY  & PNC Bank, Northvale. Beloved wife of the late Raymond. She is survived by her nieces Arlene White, Barabra White and nephews Alan White and David White, three great nieces, Kristen, Jacqueline and Shannon. 

Mrs. Mould was formerly employed with Irving Trust Bank, NY  & PNC Bank, Northvale. She was a member with St Anthony’s Church Choir and Golden Age Club of Northvale. 

Memorial Service to be held at St. Anthony’s Church, Northvale at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 4, 2020.

Lorraine always had a deep regard for animals.  Should family/friends desire, contributions may be sent to Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.

Ronald R. Magnani

Ronald R. Magnani, 75, died peacefully at home on December 30, 2019. He was born March 6, 1944 to Anthony and Hilda Magnani and lived in Northvale most his life in his childhood home. He spent his final days in River Vale with his loving companion Penny Mascarelli.

Ronald is survived by his son Kristopher Magnani, Daughter Leigh-Anne Magnani, and granddaughter Emily Magnani.

Ronald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors doing projects at his home in Upstate NY. He also loved his dogs Lakota and Shadow, and spending his free time taking them for long walks at the park.

Ronald was a Scout Master with Boy Scout Troop 124 in Northvale. He won the George Meany Award for his service. Ronald worked as an electrician with IBEW Local 164 for over 30 years. 

A get together in Ronald’s memory will be planned at a later date by his children.

Zenedes C. Mariano

Zenedes C. Mariano, 84, of Newburgh, NY, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Domingo.  Cherished mother of Donald Mariano, Eva Zoraida M. Lopez, Elena Zenaida M. Leigh, Dwight Mariano, Zony Catherine M. O’Sullivan, Maria Zenia M. Macaspac, Danila M. Shiroma and the late Danilo Mariano, Durandino Mariano and Dramonz Mariano. She also is survived by many cherished grandchildren, in-laws, other relatives and many dear friends.

Before retiring, Zenedes was a nursing aide for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed.

John M. Parvis

John (Jack) M. Parvis, 82, of Middle Village, Queens, suddenly and peacefully passed away in his sleep on Sunday, December 29, 2019 at the Actors Fund Nursing Home in Englewood, NJ.  Jack was the beloved father of John Parvis and wife Viktoria, Joseph Parvis and wife Patricia, Julie Connor and husband Matthew and Joan Pantina and husband William Casalino. Grandfather of nine grandchildren: Jillian SaSala, Danielle Parvis, Jessica Parvis, Amanda Parvis-Lanzo, Jimmy Pantina, Christopher Sanchez, Nicholas Parvis, Jena Pantina and Ryan Connor. He was also a great grandfather of six: Joshua, Austin, Christian, Cooper, Julianna and Liam.

John served in the US Navy. He was a retired elevator mechanic, with over 40 years of experience servicing elevators.

Filippo Giovinazzo

Filippo Giovinazzo, 66, of Demarest, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2019. Beloved son of the late Santo and Rose Giovinazzo. Dear brother of Rocco and his wife Tam of Old Tappan and Santo and his wife Joan of Northvale. Loving uncle of Rosemarie, Katie, Emily, Maggie and Rocky.

Phil was a longshoreman for ILA Local 1804-1 for 10 years before retiring. Prior to that he worked for Franco Carting for almost 35 years.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 11, 2019 at 11 AM at St. Anthony’s RC Church, Northvale.

Roger C. Friedman, P.E.

Roger C. Friedman, P.E., 96, of Northvale, entered eternal life on Saturday, December 21, 2019. Beloved husband of Dolores (nee Argenti) for 63 years. Devoted father of Therese Jones and husband Thomas of Norwood, Catherine Navilio and husband John of Goshen, NY and Patricia Adone and her late husband Michael of Park Ridge. Proud grandfather of Alyssa and John Navilio. Also survived by many nieces and nephews including Vito DeLaura whom he considered to be the brother he never had.

Roger was raised in Richfield Park where he attended St. Francis Elementary School and went on to board at the Anderson School for Boys in Hyde Park, NY for his high school years.

He was part of “the greatest generation” as a US Army Veteran of WWII.

He graduated from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks earning a bachelor’s of science degree in engineering in 1950 and began a career with the Army Corp of Civil Engineers there.

Roger received a job transfer to the New York office, so that he could return to New Jersey to marry his sweetheart Dolores in 1956 and settled in Northvale where they happily raised their three girls.

After a 35 year career as a professional engineer, with the Army Corps of Civil Engineers/FEMA, he retired and then began working for the State of NJ, and finally retired at age 76.

Roger was an avid sports spectator and armchair coach, he watched it all. His favorite sport was baseball. He was a Mets fan from the franchise‘s inception and was at the winning 1969 World Series.

Roger had studied meteorology in College and it became a lifelong hobby. His favorite weather season was winter. Roger always looked forward to the first snow storm and enjoyed watching it fall.

He was a parishioner at St. Anthony’s Church, Northvale.         

Faith was his anchor. He was admired for his layback positive “let’s see what happens” attitude and took life as it came in stride. Over the years, Roger faced several health challenges especially his vision and always showed tremendous resiliency.

Roger’s family would like to express their gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and the caregivers who so lovingly cared for him throughout his hospitalizations and rehab stays.
