John G. Seretis

John G. Seretis, 79, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2018. He was born in Nafpaktos, Greece. He was a Dumont resident for over 40 years. John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Toula, in 2012. Loving father of George and his wife Pam of Logan Twp., and Van and his wife Christine of Emerson NJ. Cherished Papou of Jonathan, Zachary, Lexi, Caroline, Stephanie, Nicholas, and Julia. Dear brother of four sisters. John, along with his wife Toula, owned Casa Hofbrau in Emerson for over 20 years. A devoted family man, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren in all of their sports and other activities. John was a passionate fan of the Giants and Yankees. He also enjoyed spending his free time at the horse track and watching soccer. John will always be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a hard worker, and a good friend with a wonderful sense of humor and a passion for life.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Nicholas G.O. Church, Wyckoff on Monday at 1 PM. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. The family will receive friends on Monday morning 10 am – 12 noon at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050).

Linda R. Ochse

Linda R. Ochse (nee Petersen), 72, of Valley Cottage, NY, formerly of Norwood, NJ, passed away suddenly on Monday, July 9, 2018. Devoted mother of Lisa Ochse-Hofle and husband Paul of Brewster, NY and Daniel Ochse and wife Laurinda of Northvale. Adored grandmother of Cassidy, Ryan and René. Dear sister of Kenneth Petersen and wife Marilyn.

Linda was a bookkeeper for Ferguson Plumbing Supply in Spring Valley for many years. She had also been a member of the Norwood Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Richard Carney

Richard Carney, 68, of Tappan, NY, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. Beloved husband of Laurie (nee Prentice) for 45 years. Cherished father of Robert and wife Kellyann of Northvale, NJ, Thomas and wife Roxana of Florida, NY, Laura Heyn and husband Derek of Ramsey, NJ, and Curtis and wife Cassandra of Tappan. Adored grandfather of Richard James “RJ”, Joseph, Aidan, Evan, Gavin, Hannah, Travis, Seth, Matthew, Kayla and Gabriella. Dearest brother and brother-in-law of Roger Carney, Maureen Italiano, Mary and William Moncalieri, Vincent and Susan Carney, Robert and Karla Carney, Joseph and Jeanette Carney, Janet and Patrick Meeuwissen and Bernadette Carney.

Richie was a life member of the Northvale Fire Department. He owned and operated Modern Office Equipment in Montvale for many years before working for T.O.P.S. in NYC. Rich enjoyed time with family and friends, going fishing and hunting and spending time upstate.

Garland Clifford Bandy, Jr. “Jim”

Garland Clifford Bandy, Jr. “Jim”, 73, of Northvale and Norwood, passed away unexpectedly after a short illness on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Jim was a proud US Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was an avid bowler, golfer and fisherman and as one friend commented, he will be fondly remembered as one of Northvale’s colorful characters.

He is survived by his loving children; Christina Atwood and husband Matt, Michael Brenner and wife Dawn, Shane Bandy and wife Roxanne, Leah Meskis and Matt Bandy. Beloved grandfather of 16 and great-grandfather of two. Cherished brother of Lee Bandy and wife Pat, Donna Plescia and husband Anthony and the late Robert and his wife Joyce. Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 21 from 10 AM to 12 Noon at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050). A Funeral Service will be held at 12 Noon.

Thomas H. Wright

Thomas Wright, 99, of Hillsdale, formerly of Palisades Park, died Friday, June 29, 2018, at home. Tom was born in Ridgefield, the son of Thomas C.Wright and Hilda Lustmann. He was a graduate of Leonia High School, class of 1935.  During World War II he served in the CB division of the Navy stationed in Virginia, California and eventually in the South Pacific where he constructed a base in the island of Manus. After the war, he was employed as an accountant by John Waldvogel in Ridgefield for many years. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria (nee Speciale) of 71 years and is survived by his  sons, Mark T. and Keith D. and his wife, Anne, and two grandsons, Christian and his wife,  Jennifer and Matthew and his fiancee Adrienne as well as three great-grandchildren: Tyler Jameson, Riley Elizabeth, and John Thomas.  He is also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews.  Thomas loved music and played tenor saxophone for 91 years. He was an early member of the Palisades Park Fire Dept. Band from 1949 until about 1970. From the late 1930’s he played in various dance bands regularly until the 1980’s.  After then he volunteered to play at various nursing homes and rehabs, notably at the Jewish Home in Rockleigh and the Gallen Center.  He played 49 music engagements at the age of 98.

 

The family will celebrate his life and love of music in a memorial at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave., Northvale on Saturday, July 14th  from 2PM- 5PM.   Donations in his memory will gratefully accepted by Swim-in for the Handicapped c/o Barbara A. Patrick Corrigan

Patrick Corrigan, 90, and a 57 year resident of Closter, passed away peacefully on July 1. He was born May 10, 1928 to Patrick and Mary (nee Rafferty) Corrigan in Brooklyn, NY. He was married for 45 years to Margaret (nee Agans), who passed away in 2001. He is also predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen, his sister, Mary Mayers, and nephews James and Thomas Mayers.

Patrick is survived by his three children, daughter Patricia and husband Jeffrey Cummings of Arlington, VA, son Robert of Long Island City, NY, and daughter Jeanne and husband Richard Belden of Montvale, NJ. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Michael, Cody, and Jackson Cummings, Timothy and Jessica Belden, and nephew Patrick Mayers.

Patrick was raised in Brooklyn. He is a graduate of Bishop Loughlin and St. John’s University. The majority of his career was spent with the Ford Foundation, with whom he traveled the globe and where he retired after 34 years.

Pat was a devoted volunteer and was fueled by social activity. He was an active member of several organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, the Cornerstone Group, the Golden Ages, Closter Seniors, Mr. & Mrs. Club and LAFF (Life After the Ford Foundation). He was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Closter.

He loved to travel and enjoyed sharing his adventures, as well as helping others plan their trips. He loved NYC, Broadway shows, casino trips, and storytelling. He was well known for his good company, bargain findings, driving directions, bad jokes, and generous cocktails. Patrick was a people lover and had an amazing network of comrades. He greatly cherished these friends and looked forward to his many weekly and monthly get-togethers. He always had kind words and a smile for both friends and strangers. His thoughtfulness touched many lives and he will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale on Thursday 7/5 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.   A funeral mass will be on Friday 7/6 at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Church, 20 Legion Place, Closter. Gloria M. Elenio

Gloria M. Elenio (nee Suriano), 85, of Norwood, formerly of Ridgefield and Hells Kitchen, NY, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2018. Beloved wife of Paul J. Elenio. Devoted mother of Nancy Conforti and husband Thomas of Emerson, Paul F. Elenio and wife Deborah of Hasbrouck Heights and Frank Elenio and wife Rose of Ridgefield. Cherished grandmother of Bryan (Lisa), Daniel, Emily and Frank and great-grandmother of Logan James.

Gloria was a registrar for Borough of Ridgefield for many years. She was also a crossing guard and police matron in addition to being active in the recreation department. In retirement Gloria enjoyed time spent at the Norwood Senior Center and served as secretary.

Joan Marie Johnson

Joan Marie Johnson, 80, of Northvale, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018. Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael and cherished son, Michael. Loving mother of Joseph, Mary Ann, Christine Para and husband Carlos, James and Paul. Adored grandmother of Kevin, Christian, Gavin and Madison. Dearest sister of the late Anthony Kraus.

Joan had recently retired from Leonard Kreusch Winery in Northvale where she was a receptionist for many years.

Alfred Laino

With his three children at his side, Alfred Laino of Norwood passed away on June 22. Born on May 11, 1923, he was the third of five children born to Joseph and Taitu Laino of Cliffside Park. After graduation from Cliffside Park High School he served in occupied Japan at the close of WWII where he was selected to attend radar repair school, and served again in Germany during the Korean Conflict where he showed his talent as a radar repair man.

 

Upon his return from service, he met the woman with whom he would share 64 happy years of married life. In 1953 he married Lucille Cattaneo, also of Cliffside Park. Al and Lucille had three children before the family moved to Norwood, NJ in 1964, where the couple lived until October 2017. Their remaining months were spent at Sunrise Senior Living in Cresskill, NJ.

 

After serving an apprenticeship at Alcoa in Edgewater, he worked for many years as a tool and die maker and finally as a model maker for a manufacturing firm. Possessed of both a keen insight into the motives of others and an instinctive skill for negotiations, his coworkers invariably made him their shop steward.

 

Alfred often spoke fondly of devotion to family, and held to the end his pride in his family, which he saw as his legacy created together with Lucille. Alfred was predeceased by his wife, Lucille, brothers Ralph and Julius Laino, and sister Nonnie Bolz. He is survived by his sister Rita Slevin, son Keith Laino and his wife Carol Priore Laino, daughters Kim Zipperle and her husband Carl, and Kathy Millstein and her husband Jeff, twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family plans a private celebration of Alfred’s life in August.

 

Gloria B. Conrad

Gloria B. Conrad (nee Battaglia), 88, of Norwood, NJ passed away peacefully on June 24. She was born on July 19, 1929 to Amos and Filomena “Fay” (nee Cannalonga) Battaglia in Union City, NJ. She was married for 54 years to her husband John who died on August 15, 2005. She is survived by her three children: Nancy Brizzolara (Thomas) of Norwood, NJ; John (Elizabeth) Conrad of River Vale, NJ; Barbara Orlandi (Steven) of Douglasville, GA. She is also survived by her eleven loving grandchildren David (Emmalee), Michael, and Alicia Brizzolara, Brittany, Paige, and Kevin Conrad, and Brian McKnight, Caitlin Sheaffer (Tim) , Kristin Gosdin (Joshua) and Steven and Kevin Orlandi, and her great-grandson Austin Michael Sheaffer, her loving sister Marie Pedalino (Dominic) of Totowa, NJ, and many nieces and nephews. Gloria grew up in Union City, NJ and moved to the “country” and lived in Norwood for over 65 years. She was a 1947 graduate of Emerson High School in Union City, and a 1951 graduate of Trenton State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education. She was a 1st grade teacher for 28 years at Immaculate Conception School / Holy Family School in Norwood and became Vice Principal. For over 50 years, she loved vacationing in Sanibel Island, collecting seashells, traveling, cooking, gardening, and sewing. She took great pleasure and pride in her grandchildren’s athletic and artistic endeavors and successes in their chosen careers. Visitation at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale on Friday 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00. Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM on Saturday at St. Anthony’s Church, 199 Walnut St. Northvale.
