Gloria M. Elenio

Gloria M. Elenio (nee Suriano), 85, of Norwood, formerly of Ridgefield and Hells Kitchen, NY, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2018. Beloved wife of Paul J. Elenio. Devoted mother of Nancy Conforti and husband Thomas of Emerson, Paul F. Elenio and wife Deborah of Hasbrouck Heights and Frank Elenio and wife Rose of Ridgefield. Cherished grandmother of Bryan (Lisa), Daniel, Emily and Frank and great-grandmother of Logan James.

Gloria was a registrar for Borough of Ridgefield for many years. She was also a crossing guard and police matron in addition to being active in the recreation department. In retirement Gloria enjoyed time spent at the Norwood Senior Center and served as secretary.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 10 AM at St. Anthony’s RC Church, Northvale with entombment to follow at Madonna Mausoleum, Fort Lee. Visiting hours are Monday 4-8 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050).

Joan Marie Johnson

Joan Marie Johnson, 80, of Northvale, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018. Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael and cherished son, Michael. Loving mother of Joseph, Mary Ann, Christine Para and husband Carlos, James and Paul. Adored grandmother of Kevin, Christian, Gavin and Madison. Dearest sister of the late Anthony Kraus.

Joan had recently retired from Leonard Kreusch Winery in Northvale where she was a receptionist for many years.

Alfred Laino

With his three children at his side, Alfred Laino of Norwood passed away on June 22. Born on May 11, 1923, he was the third of five children born to Joseph and Taitu Laino of Cliffside Park. After graduation from Cliffside Park High School he served in occupied Japan at the close of WWII where he was selected to attend radar repair school, and served again in Germany during the Korean Conflict where he showed his talent as a radar repair man.

 

Upon his return from service, he met the woman with whom he would share 64 happy years of married life. In 1953 he married Lucille Cattaneo, also of Cliffside Park. Al and Lucille had three children before the family moved to Norwood, NJ in 1964, where the couple lived until October 2017. Their remaining months were spent at Sunrise Senior Living in Cresskill, NJ.

 

After serving an apprenticeship at Alcoa in Edgewater, he worked for many years as a tool and die maker and finally as a model maker for a manufacturing firm. Possessed of both a keen insight into the motives of others and an instinctive skill for negotiations, his coworkers invariably made him their shop steward.

 

Alfred often spoke fondly of devotion to family, and held to the end his pride in his family, which he saw as his legacy created together with Lucille. Alfred was predeceased by his wife, Lucille, brothers Ralph and Julius Laino, and sister Nonnie Bolz. He is survived by his sister Rita Slevin, son Keith Laino and his wife Carol Priore Laino, daughters Kim Zipperle and her husband Carl, and Kathy Millstein and her husband Jeff, twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family plans a private celebration of Alfred’s life in August.

 

Gloria B. Conrad

Gloria B. Conrad (nee Battaglia), 88, of Norwood, NJ passed away peacefully on June 24. She was born on July 19, 1929 to Amos and Filomena “Fay” (nee Cannalonga) Battaglia in Union City, NJ. She was married for 54 years to her husband John who died on August 15, 2005. She is survived by her three children: Nancy Brizzolara (Thomas) of Norwood, NJ; John (Elizabeth) Conrad of River Vale, NJ; Barbara Orlandi (Steven) of Douglasville, GA. She is also survived by her eleven loving grandchildren David (Emmalee), Michael, and Alicia Brizzolara, Brittany, Paige, and Kevin Conrad, and Brian McKnight, Caitlin Sheaffer (Tim) , Kristin Gosdin (Joshua) and Steven and Kevin Orlandi, and her great-grandson Austin Michael Sheaffer, her loving sister Marie Pedalino (Dominic) of Totowa, NJ, and many nieces and nephews. Gloria grew up in Union City, NJ and moved to the “country” and lived in Norwood for over 65 years. She was a 1947 graduate of Emerson High School in Union City, and a 1951 graduate of Trenton State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education. She was a 1st grade teacher for 28 years at Immaculate Conception School / Holy Family School in Norwood and became Vice Principal. For over 50 years, she loved vacationing in Sanibel Island, collecting seashells, traveling, cooking, gardening, and sewing. She took great pleasure and pride in her grandchildren’s athletic and artistic endeavors and successes in their chosen careers. Elmo J. Bodrato

Elmo J. Bodrato, 95, a lifelong resident of Northvale passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Yolanda (nee Grassi). Loving father of John and his wife Kellie. Cherished grandfather of Chelsea, TJ, Kathleen and John and great-grandfather of Robert, Kayleigh, Jovan and Mya. Dearest brother of Arthur and the late Freddie and Joseph.

Elmo was a proud veteran of the US Navy, having fought in four major battles in the Pacific. He was a member of the Northvale American Legion and was treasurer and past commander. Elmo was a civil engineer and worked for Raimondi Associates in Westwood for many years.

Deborah Ann Quinn

Deborah Ann Quinn (nee Lawten), passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on the morning of June 7, 2018, after her brave year and a half battle with cancer. She was 62 years old.

 

Debbie grew up in Fort Lee, NJ, prior to moving to Harrington Park, NJ, where she lived for 39 years. Debbie attended high school at the Academy of the Holy Angels. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1979, and Master of Science degree in Education with Distinction from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 1996. Debbie began her career as a Registered Nurse at Pascack Valley Hospital. She later went on to work as a school nurse and health educator for Closter Public Schools, where she retired in 2014 after 20 years of service.

 

She loved spending time at the shore and enjoyed many hobbies such as playing the piano and tracing her family lineage. Debbie was also a devout Catholic and parishioner at Our Lady of Victories Church for 39 years.

 

Debbie is now reunited with her parents, Warren and Ellen Lawten. Her memory will always be cherished by her loving husband of 40 years, Richard F. Quinn, of Harrington Park, NJ; her beloved daughter, Megan and son, Robert; her granddaughter, Madeline and beloved companion dog, Lamby. The legacy of her kind and generous spirit will live on through her family and friends.

 

Visitation at the Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Avenue, Northvale, NJ, will be on Sunday, June 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered in Our Lady of Victories Church, Harrington Park, NJ, on Monday, June 11 at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Madonna Cemetery and Mausoleum, Fort Lee, NJ.

Eileen T. Carley

Former Piermont resident Eileen T. Carley (nee Maye) died on May 30, 2018 in Port St. Lucie Florida, surrounded by all of her adoring children.

Daughter of Thomas and Mary Maye (nee Gallagher), Eileen was born on June 17, 1938 in New York City, where she graduated from St. Nicholas of Tolentine. She met the love of her life, Thomas Carley, in her South Bronx neighborhood. They were wed on June 21, 1958. In 1971, Tom and Eileen moved their growing family to Piermont, NY. While devoting herself to caring for her children she found time to participate in community life. She served as lector and CCD teacher at St. John’s in Piermont, and was a pioneer in the Conservative party in New York. As her children grew more independent, she reinvented herself as a career woman, rising from cashier to regional supervisor with Catskill OTB. Her family was proud of her success. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing all kinds of games, which she usually won. Eileen threw fabulous parties, whether tailgating at Giants games or at the many gatherings she hosted. Tom and Eileen’s later years were spent enjoying retirement in Florida, where Eileen’s life was enriched by dear friends made in Port St. Lucie.

Eileen was pre-deceased by her devoted husband Thomas in 2014. She is survived by her six children: Kathleen Harris (Scott) of Bronxville, Thomas (MaryBeth) of Blauvelt, John (Maria) of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Jean Dennehy (John) of Piermont, Mary Carley-Pilon (Philippe) of Paris, France, and Peg DeGennaro (Ken) of Northvale, NJ; 20 cherished grandchildren Scott (Ashley), Bobby (Taber) Kelly and Brian Harris; Tommy, Meagan, Mary and Maeve Carley; Maggie and Michael Carley; John, Kristen, Brendan and Kevin Dennehy; Luke and Sophie Pilon; Carley, Lauren, Marin and Katie DeGennaro, and three great grandchildren Andrianna, Angelo and Ava Harris; two sisters, Mary Holt of New City, and Patricia Fitzmaurice of Bergenfield, NJ and will be remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased her sisters Nora and Bridget.

She will be deeply missed and remembered for her devotion to her family, her sharp wit and her sunny smile that touched all who crossed her path.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2-5 and 7-9 pm at Pizzi Funeral Home in Northvale, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. at St John’s in Piermont followed by burial at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill, NY.

Margaret Iannaccone, 94, of Northvale, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2018. A lifetime resident of Northvale, she was predeceased by her beloved sisters, Olympia Keegan, Anna Vicari and Viola Hogan. She was the cherished aunt of Eddie Keegan, John and Ida Hogan and Frances and Ron Weston. Loving great-aunt of Jesse, Ron, Samantha, Rachel, John, Zach, Ryan, and Ava. Margaret was a supervisor at Heidenberg’s garment factory in Closter for many years before retiring.

Laurie M. Rizzo (nee Weiland), 71, of Bardonia, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2018. Cherished wife of Thomas Jr. Loving mother of Thomas III and his wife Jennifer of Nanuet and Paul and his wife Christina of Bardonia. Adored grandmother of Jesse Thomas. Laurie will forever be remembered as a “SuperMom and SuperGrandmom” who dedicated her life to her devoted husband, sons and grandson. She was a loving and generous woman, welcoming everyone into her home and making sure they left full, especially the neighborhood kids. She will be missed by all who knew her.
