Louis R. Distefano, Sr.

Louis R. Distefano, Sr., 74, of Northvale, entered into restful peace on Wednesday, November 14, 2012.  Louis grew up in the Inwood Section of Manhattan, the son of Emanuel and Lucy.

Louis was a sheet metal worker for 34 years and a proud member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local28 for over 50 years.

On a blind date set up by his aunt and uncle he met the love of his life, Johanna.

Louis is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Johanna, and their son, Joseph.

He is survived by his six children;  Louis Jr. and his wife Theresa of Valley Cottage, NY, Cynthia Metzger and her husband Gene of Washington Twp., Lisa Ortelere of Northvale, Nadine of Suffern, Robert and his Carole of Wall, and Jim of Brooklyn.

Dear brother of Salvatore and Sarah and uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Poppi was adored by his eight grandchildren; Brady, Logan and Kaidyn Distefano; Isabella and Emma Metzger; Joseph Ortelere; and Nicholas and Katie Distefano.  Poppi took great pride and joy in attending their many school activities and sporting events, and watching them grow into the fine young people they are.

Louis was an avid golfer and hunter, and enjoyed keeping up with the latest  technology.

He and Johanna were former members of the Northvale Volunteer Ambulance Corps and were parishioners of St. Anthony’s RC Church.  Throughout their lives they enjoyed traveling around the world and wintering in Naples, FL.

Louis will be missed dearly by all who knew him and loved him.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday 9:30 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, Northvale with entombment to follow at Madonna Mausoleum, Fort Lee.

Maureen Porschen

Maureen Porschen (nee Haverty), of Naples, FL, formerly of Northvale, passed away Friday, November 9, 2012 at the age of 68.  Beloved wife of William.  Loving
mother of Eric Porschen of Naples, and Drew Porschen and his wife Susan of
Northvale.  Dear sister and sister-in-law of Kathleen and Frank Vozeh of Sevierville, TN.

Maureen adored her grandchildren, Taylor Porschen of Naples and Allyson and Rebecca Porschen of Northvale.

Maureen epitomized all the good times a family could embrace.  She was raised by the late Agnes and Ed Haverty of Little Ferry, and like her parents, provided a loving and caring environment even in the toughest of times.  Family was everything to her,
and for this we are so thankful to have had her in our lives.  From the church dances to family gatherings, Maureen was front and center lending a hand, always with a smile.  She cherished all her family and friends.

Maureen always paid tribute to family and friends who have passed and now we pay tribute to her.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Anthony R.Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale.

Louise Sohlman

Louise Sohlman (nee Schneider), 83, formerly of Northvale, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2012.  Beloved mother of Wayne and his wife Carol Ann.  Loving grandmother of Stephanie John and Robert Sohlman.  Adored great-grandmother of Ethan and Matthew John.  Dearest sister of Margaret Sucick of Old Tappan and the late Shirley Bloyd.

Before retiring, Mrs. Sohlman worked for Prentice Hall in Old Tappan.

Raymond J. Connolly

Raymond J. Connolly, 82, of Harrington Park, NJ for 43 years, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2012. Beloved husband of Abigail. Loving father of Abigail Connolly of Brooklyn, Anne Connolly of Rutherford, and Christopher Connolly and his wife Patty of Newton, MA. Adored grandfather of Liam and Thomas. Dearest brother of Richard and the late Edward and Ann.
Mr. Connolly was born February 21, 1930 in Bronx, NY, and graduated from
Regis HS ’47 and Fordham University School of Education ’51.

A lifelong educator, Mr.Connolly retired from the NYC Board of Education after 35 years of service as a master teacher at George Washington HS. He also taught at Yeshiva Samson Raphael Hirsch HS and Paramus Catholic HS. Ray was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Victories RC Church in Harrington Park, having served as lector and as a member of the choir. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed spending time in his garden.

Howard F. Van Allen

Howard F. Van Allen,  86, of Old Tappan, formerly of Hicksville and College Pt., NY, passed away at home on Sunday, October 21, 2012.   Beloved husband of the late Philomena (nee Swihura).  Loving father of Linda DeSimone of Old  Tappan, Margaret Van Allen-Clay and her husband Jesse of Cypress, TX, Lisa Patton and her husband George of Evans, GA, and Robline Swanson of Queen Creek, AZ.  Adored grandfather of John,  Jennifer, Jaime, Kelli, Joshua, Jessica, and the late Kristen.  Cherished great-grandfather of Chloe, Jenna, Dyanna, Avery, Emma, and Mia.  Dearest brother of Thomas Van Allen and Gertrude Commini.  Predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.

Mr. Van Allen was a US Army Veteran of WWII.  He was a cabinet maker before retiring.

Salvatore “Sonny” Puglia

Salvatore “Sonny” Puglia, of Northvale, passed away peacefully at the Brentwood in
Norwood, NJ on October 18, 2012.  He was born on July 4, 1927, in New York City and was a lifelong resident of Northvale, NJ.  He is survived by his loving wife of
54 years, Maddalena (Capozzoli), and devoted daughter Annette Herskowitz and
her husband Wayne.  He leaves behind three grandsons whom he adored – Brett, Erik, and Jason.  He was predeceased by his siblings Angelo, Nicholas, Louis, and Mary.

Sal was a proud World War II veteran serving in the United States Army Constabulary Forces in Germany from 1945-1947.  He was a founding member of the Northvale VFW Post 162 where he spent many years volunteering and enjoying the company of his friends and comrades.  Sal will be remembered for his smile, sense of humor, love of history and the Italian language, and the happiness he brought his family and everyone he touched.

John J. Maschi

John J. Maschi, 90, a longtime resident of Norwood, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2012.  Born October 17, 1922 to the late Paul and Catherine Maschi.  Beloved husband of the late Josephine (nee D’Ercole).  Devoted father and father-in-law of John and Linda Maschi of CA, Sharon and Peter Anderson, Linda and Peter Daniele, and Tina Maschi, all of Norwood.  Cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Laura,
Kevin, Anthony, Christopher, Johnathan, Michael, and Micah.  Predeceased by two sisters, Mary T. Giannotti and Santina Mooney, and three brothers, Joseph, Louis, and Charles.

John was a proud Veteran, having served with the 66th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop in WWII.  He belonged to the American Legion in Norwood.  John retired from the Ford Motor Company in Mahwah after 43 years, and continued to work  at D’Ercole Farm in Norwood.

Besides his family, John will always be remembered for his love of the Yankees, Giants, and ice cream.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Sunday 2 PM at Immaculate Conception Church, Norwood, 211 Summit St., Norwood. It will be followed by a luncheon at Colonial Inn which vegetarian food will also be served.

Eugene L. Nicolini

Eugene L. Nicolini, 90, of Northvale, formerly of Bronx, NY, passed away at home on Monday, October 8, 2012.  Dear husband of the late Genevieve (nee Brutkowski).

A World War II Veteran, he served in the US Army as a Corporal in the European Theater.  He was a former employee of NYC Transit (MABSTOA) as a dispatcher.  Eugene was a member of the Fraternal Order of Red Men, Half Moon Tribe 283 in Northvale for many years.

Devoted father of Lorraine Nicolini of Northvale.  Cherished grandfather of Christine Whitlock of Boston, MA and Michael Whitlock of Northvale.  Dear brother of Arthur and his wife Frances of Katonah, NY.  Predeceased by his twin brother Lino and brother Alfred.  Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Joseph C. Bozdech

Joseph C. Bozdech, 75, of Norwood passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2012.  Beloved husband of Lillian (nee Stubits).Loving father and father-in-law of Gregory and Lori of League City, TX, MaryLee and Michael McGoorty of New City, Mark and
Lisa of Mahwah, and Jody and Peter Calabrese of Congers. Adored grandfather of
Ashley, Joseph, Jillian, Michael, Peter J., and Thomas. Dear brother of Walter
Bozdech and Frieda Ginsburg.  Also survived by many loving relatives and friends.

Joseph retired from the Sheet Metal Union Local 28 after 57 years of service, and was devoted to his next fulltime job as “Papa”. Throughout his life he was involved
in many organizations. He was a Lifetime Member of the Norwood Fire Department,
President of the Norwood Board of Health, Coach for the Norwood Little League,
President of the Parents Guild at Immaculate Conception School, Member of the
Holy Name Society at Immaculate Conception Church and served as an Usher, Coach
of the Motorcross Bicycle Racing Team, Member of the Norwood American Legion,
involved in the Knights of Columbus and volunteered teaching children at
Elmwood School. Joseph was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.  He will be missed by all who were touched by him.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 12 Noon at Immaculate Conception RC Church, Norwood.  Visiting hours are Sunday 7-9 PM and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Anthony R. Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave., Northvale.
