Joseph Philip Kavalam, 88, of Northvale, NJ, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Lilly (née Mathai), the loving father of Susan, Beena, and Pamela Kavalam, and the caring brother of Sr. Sucy Maria and K.P. Rajamma of India. He was predeceased by his siblings K.P. Mathai, Kunjunjamma Augustine, Annamma Joseph, and Koshy Philip.
Joseph was born to his parents K M Philip and Mariamma Koshy Philip and raised in Changanassery, Kerala, India. He came to the United States in 1963 to pursue dual Master’s Degrees in Chemistry and Food Science at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He and Lilly married in 1969 in Minnesota and moved the family to New Jersey. They lived in Piscataway, Teaneck, and for the last 38 years in Northvale. For most of his career, he was a chemist at Barr Labs in Pomona, NY, and previously at US Vitamin (Revlon).
Visiting hours are Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 2-5 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Avenue, Northvale, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 24, 2026, at 10 AM at St. Anthony’s RC Church, Northvale, NJ. Interment will follow at Tappan Reformed Church Cemetery.
