Anthony J. Ubl, 88, of Northvale, NJ passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Anthony was born and raised in West New York. He was beloved by his mother, the industrious and kind Barbara Schwartz Ubl. His companion in childhood was his older sister, Barbara, who devotedly watched over her baby brother. Barbara let Tony join her on adventures in West New York, taking the long walk across town to the movie theater to preserve their bus money for mallo bars, and even occasionally sneaking him out the window to let him join the older boys in street sports and games. They were forever proud of their older brother, the late Joseph, who died in Manila serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Anthony excelled in basketball, but played many sports while attending Memorial High School, including a brief stint on the track team. While at Memorial, he met the bright and beautiful Joyce (nee Hoppe), who he married in 1961. The two would enjoy a 65-year marriage filled with beach trips to Wildwood, bike rides around the neighborhood, and Turkey Hill iced tea on the deck above their wooded backyard. They stayed connected with their dear school friends, unfailingly attending Memorial High School reunions throughout their lives.
From West New York, Anthony and Joyce moved to Hickory Avenue in Bergenfield and later settled on the end of the cul-de-sac of Campora Drive in Northvale, where they would raise two sons—Anthony M. Ubl and Jeffrey S. Ubl. Anthony joined the United Auto Workers’ Union and worked for the Chrysler Corporation in Tappan, NY for many years. After retiring, he also worked among friends at the Pizzi Funeral Home for over 10 years, where he was affectionately known as “Whitey.”
Anthony never lost his love for athletics, always enjoying a walk at the Piermont Pier or Tallman Park with Joyce. Throughout his life, he played on local softball teams, coached Northvale youth sports, and cheered on his son Anthony in the Fire Department’s softball league. He taught his sons, and later, his granddaughters—Caitlin and Ellen—how to throw a baseball. And, when his granddaughters unfortunately defected to less spectator-friendly sports, he still attended their races and meets at Darlington County Park, Garret Mountain Reservation, and the Bubble in Toms River. He always braved the cold or the heat to cheer them on, whether that be on the track at Williams College or on the streets of Manhattan during the 2025 New York Marathon.
On Sunday afternoons, Anthony invited his granddaughters to assist him in the production of his famous meatballs for family dinners. He loyally followed the New York Giants and New York Yankees—watching every game even in their weaker seasons. He enjoyed woodworking and home repair, always working on a project in his garage workshop. He loved mornings spent exercising at the gym and catching up with the Breakfast Club. He took pleasure in small, everyday joys, like a freshly cut lawn or a good slice of pizza from Three Boys. But most of all, Anthony loved his family and friends, and we will miss him.
Beloved husband of Joyce. Cherished father of Anthony and Jeffrey, and wife Sue-Ellen. Adored grandfather of Ellen and fiancé, Sam, and Caitlin and husband, Paul. Dear brother of Barbara and the late Joseph.
Visiting hours are Monday, September 28, 2026 from 4-7pm at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Avenue, Northvale, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at 10am at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Northvale, NJ, with interment to follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY.
