Uncle Joe. He was married to my father’s youngest sister. Living on the west coast, we had few opportunities to be together, but those times we met, he conveyed his warmth and respect for his wife’s family quietly, but surely. When I think of my Uncle, that’s the word that comes to mind. Respectful. He respected the family he grew up in. He loved and respected the country he served so heroically. He respected his marriage and family, working overtime to take tender care of his lovely bride and daughter. He made my Aunt feel safe. He was so respectful of all the characters in his wife’s family, taking care of his in-laws as faithfully as he could. I wish we had had more time to share together, Uncle Joe. But I feel like I know the important pieces of your life, the ones that matter most. I honor and respect your life, and your memory.
