
Mildred Ann Nemchek May 17,1937 – June 21, 2026
Mildred Ann (Millie) Nemchek was born on May 17,1937 at Flowers Hospital in East Harlem, Manhattan, NY to John and Anna (nee Viskup) Malek.
She graduated as Valedictorian from Elmer Ellsworth Junior High School and was accepted to and graduated from Hunter High School in 1955 with awards in mathematics, history and Spanish. Millie graduated Cum Laude from Hunter College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics & Physics. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa (excellence in Liberal Arts & Sciences), Pi Mu Epsilon (Mathematics) and Kappa Delta Pi (Education) fraternities, honors of which she was most proud.
Upon graduation, Millie Geometry was her passion, especially geometric proofs. She loved to hear from past students and their successes in the STEM fields. In 1993, while she was still teaching at Northern Valley Demarest, Millie earned a Master of Arts in Administration & Supervision from Jersey City State College.
Millie was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where she taught 8th grade Sunday School, was a member of the WELCA Bethany Circle, and participated in the Prayer Shawl Ministry.
She served on the Education Committee of the Norwood/Northvale Women’s Club. She was also an active member of the Norwood Senior Citizen’s Club.
In retirement, Millie volunteered as an ESL tutor and as a companion at Buckingham Nursing Home in Norwood.
Millie was an avid quilter and gardener. When she was not behind a sewing machine, Millie was a voracious reader, spending her time behind the pages of historical novels.
Extremely proud of her Slovak heritage, Millie’s role as her family’s historian will be sorely missed.
In addition to her parents, she is pre-deceased by her brother, John Richard Malek, and her beloved travel companion and husband of 58 years, George Robert (Bob) Nemchek. Millie is survived by daughter Barbara and husband Philip Mones, son Robert and wife Beth (nee Coverdale), her adored grandchildren Katie, Steven, Vickie (Joe Zeigler), Jana (Cole Methot), and Christiana, and her cherished great-granddaughter Adelaide.
A Memorial Service in Millie’s memory will be held on Friday July 24, 2026, at 11:00am at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 106 Orangeburgh Rd., Old Tappan, NJ. Please join us immediately after the internment in the Peace Garden for a champagne/pink Catawba toast to celebrate Millie’s life and Bob’s birthday. Donations in Millie’s memory may be made to Hunter High School MANHATTAN HUNTER SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL or Prince of Peace Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Old Tappan, NJ.
