Dorothy Claire Walker

 

Dorothy Claire Walker (nee Stiteler), 83, of Northvale, passed away suddenly on Monday, November 27, 2017.

Claire was the beloved wife of Robert F. Walker for more than 60 years, and she leaves a legacy of love and devotion to him, her family and friends.  She was the cherished mother of Karen Nolan of Fairport, NY, Wendy Mattner and husband Jeffrey of Martinsville, IN, Jeffrey Walker and wife Diane of Harrington Park and Jacqueline Walker of Park Ridge. She was also the adored grandmother of Melissa, Allyson, Kimberly, Claudia, Michele, Caitlin, Emily and Brian and great-grandmother of Brogan, Elliot, Kinlee, Adrienne, Sydney, Chloe, Judah and Asher. She was predeceased by her sisters Laurene Pierce and Betty Kuhn and her son-in-law, Richard Nolan.

Claire started her professional life as a teacher in Suffern, NY. After raising her children she worked at Optyl in Norwood and then the Langerman Eye Institute in Orangeburg, NY. She was a very active member of the Tappan Reformed Church in Tappan, NY for many years.

May Claire’s vibrant and joyful spirit, love for others and life itself, generosity, and sense of humor live on through all the lives that she touched.  She will be deeply missed by so many.

Nicholas Camenares

 

Nicholas Camenares of Pearl River, aged 93, passed away on November 20, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 65 years June (nee Vespoli), children Karen Azcuy (husband Dennis) of Tappan and Kevin Camenares of Arlington, VA, and grandchildren Derek (wife Jessilyn), Evan and Victoria.  He also leaves behind two brothers, Peter and George.

Nicholas was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific theater. He was active in several veterans organizations, and was an Amateur Radio Operator (W2PAV) for many years. He was a lifelong member of the Masons (AGDS Lodge), and more recently, the Montebello Senior Center in Suffern. He was also a founding member of Saints Helen & Constantine Greek Orthodox Church in West Nyack.

John S. Gugger

 

John S. Gugger, 99, of Park Ridge, formerly of Northvale, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife Gloria (nee Dankert), cherished daughter Barbara DiStase and siblings, Marion, Earl, Robert and Betty Jane. John is survived by his grandchildren, Stephanie Beckedorff and husband Thomas Sr. and John DiStase and wife Sharon, great-grandchildren, Sydney, Thomas Jr., Max, Alexandra and Issabella, son-in-law, Raymond DiStase, and sister, Florence Torregrossa.

John was a WWII Veteran of US Army and served in the US, Iceland and the Philippines. A carpenter, he was a partner of John Richard Construction in Hillsdale for many years. He was a life member of the Park Ridge Elks and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. In retirement he enjoyed his job at the Bergen County Golf Course in Rockleigh and playing golf with his many dear friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday 10 AM at St. Anthony’s RC Church, Northvale with interment to follow at Tappan Cemetery, Tappan, NY. Visitation is Sunday 1-4 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050).

Alphonso H. Young, Sr. “Pete”

 

ALPHONSO H. YOUNG, SR., (86) peacefully passed away at 7pm, on Saturday, November 18, 2017.

 

Alphonso, better known by all as Pete was the youngest male child born to Fess and Flora (Taylor) Young on June 22, 1931, in Shelby, NC.

 

He grew up in a very large household, being one of 14 children where his father and all his brothers were master Craftsmen and Builders. Pete had a genius IQ and had the ability to construct almost anything. He served in the US Air Force and was stationed at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany where he entertained the troops as a baseball and basketball player. At the end of his military service he moved to Englewood, NJ where he worked for a brief period with his brothers Floyd and Jimmy Young. He was employed shortly thereafter by Lowe Paper Company in Ridgefield, NJ where he worked as a Chemist and formulated color that went on paper products. He was instrumental in developing the yellow that went on the Kodak film packaging and the pink that went on Oil of Olay products. During his employment with Lowe Paper Company he was involved in an industrial accident in February 1955 where he lost both of his arms. During his rehabilitation at Kessler Institute in East Orange, NJ he met and subsequently married his next-door neighbor, Barbara Earl. They were married on January 7, 1956. Two children were born from this union…a son, Alphonso H. Young, Jr and a daughter, Adrienne R. Young. This marriage ended in October, 2002, and they have remained friends over the years since their divorce.

 

Over the last ten years Pete suffered from renal disease and valiantly went to dialysis three times a week. He ultimately lost his battle with Alzheimers and passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at The Bergen County Healthcare Center in Rockleigh, NJ.

 

Pete is survived by two sisters; Naomi Coates of Detroit, MI, Ruby Cline (Tal) of Shelby, NC, a beloved ex-wife Barbara Williams (George) of Warrenton, GA, a son Alphonso Young, Jr. (Carol) of Closter, NJ, a daughter Adrienne (Howard) of Ramsey, NJ. Eight grandchildren, Jason Allen (Angela), Dallas, TX, Alyson Specht (Gary), Wallkill, NY, Kimberly Respeto (Sean), Houston, TX, John Young, Closter, NJ, Andrew Allen (Jennifer), Washington, NJ, Nataly Young, Alex Young and Haley Young of Closter, NJ. Eleven great-children, Emma and Asher Allen of Dallas, TX, Gary Specht III and Deanna Specht of Wallkill, NY, Maya Respeto, Ava Respeto and Tyler Respeto of Houston, TX, Andrew John Young, Ringwood, NJ, Amelia Groschel of Bergenfield, NJ and Greyson and Kingston Allen of Washington, NJ and a myriad of nieces, nephews and friends.

Kathleen Rosenkranz

 

Kathleen Rosenkranz (nee Smith), 92, of Northvale, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Anthony Joseph Rosenkranz. Loving mother of Patricia Rosenkranz-Levins and husband Kenneth of Tenafly and Kathleen Rosenkranz-Radcliffe and husband James of Woodcliff Lake. Adored grandmother of Virginia and Anthony. Predeceased by six brothers and a sister.

Kathleen was a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church and was a member of the Rosary Society as well as the Northvale Senior Center and Golden Agers. Kathleen was a supervisor for AT&T prior to raising her children. Afterwards she became a teacher’s aide, working for Bergen County Special Services.

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday November 29 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, Northvale with interment to follow at Tappan Cemetery, Tappan, NY. Visiting hours are Tuesday November 28 from 3-6 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Avenue, Northvale (201-767-3050).

John S. Rizzo

 

John S. Rizzo, 72, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away at home on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Beloved husband of Winifred (née Moncalieri). Loving father of Tracie Block, April Stevenson, Aaron Rizzo, John Rizzo and the late Richard Block. Adored grandfather of Kaila, Faythe, Kennedy, Keely, Emily and Samuel and great-grandfather of Bristol Lynn. John is the dearest brother of Samuel, Phillip, the late William Rizzo and Maryann White.

John is a US Army Veteran who served in Vietnam. Photography was one of his first passions which led to a career as a photo processing technician. His greatest passion however, was spending time with his family whom he was surrounded by at the time of his passing.

Lucille S. Laino

Lucille S. Laino, 90, of Norwood, NJ on Friday, October 27, 2017. Predeceased by her sister, Margaret Barth, she is survived by her husband of 64 years, Alfred; son Keith Laino and his wife, Carol, of Bethlehem Twp, PA; daughter Kim Zipperle and her husband, Carl, of Tenafly; and daughter Kathy Millstein and her husband, Jeff, of Norwood; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive her.

Lucille was born in Union City to Julia and Angelo Cattaneo and lived her early years in Cliffside Park.  A gifted student, she graduated first in her class at Cliffside Park High School and then completed pre-medical studies at the New Jersey College for Women. After marriage and three children, she and Alfred moved with their family to Norwood where they lived for over 50 years. She was a devoted member of The Presbyterian Church in Norwood, where she served as an elder and deacon.

Her life of steadfast devotion to family, friends and community will be honored by a memorial service at the Presbyterian Church at 701 Broadway in Norwood on Saturday, November 4 at 11 AM. Memorial donations in Lucille’s name may be made to the Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.

 

Francis Thomas Maloney

 

Francis Thomas Maloney 78, of Tappan, NY, died Saturday, October 28, 2017 following a long illness. He was born on November 21, 1938 in Manhattan to Julia and Francis Maloney. He married the love of his life Loretta Curtin on June 30, 1962 at The Church of the Sacred Heart, in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. Francis had a long and distinguished career in education beginning as an English teacher with the New York City Public Schools and retiring after 40 years as a school administrator. His passion and unparalleled commitment to learning enabled him to help shape the future of the many students he served. Francis earned an academic scholarship to Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, he received his bachelor’s degree with honors from Fordham University and holds two master’s degrees in English and School Administration from Yeshiva and Pace University, respectively. Francis was devoted to his family, faith and community and served his country with distinction as a United States Marines Reservist. A literature and running enthusiast, he could often be seen running through town, book or newspaper in hand. Francis was a parishioner at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Tappan, New York and a member of The Tappantown Historical Society. Francis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Loretta (nee Curtin) and his loving children Julianne Maloney (Nelson Torres), Caseyanne Bombassei (Jim), Stephen Maloney (Alexis) and Deirdre Humer (Ron), brothers John and Michael Maloney; his 9 grandchildren, Matthew, Alexandra, Devon, Connor, Ryan, Jack, Caitlin, Logan, and Madison. Francis was predeceased by his parents and youngest brother Stephen.

The family will receive friends & family on Wednesday, November 1st at Pizzi Funeral Home 120 Paris Avenue Northvale, NJ from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Francis on Thursday, November 2nd at 11 am at Our Lady of Sacred Heart 120 Kings Highway Tappan, NY with interment to follow at Tappan Cemetery.

Agatino J. Cacciola

 

Agatino J. Cacciola, 88, of Tappan, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. Beloved husband of Agnes R. (nee DeLuca). Devoted father of Camille Paolino of Chatham, NJ and Joseph Cacciola and wife Sandra of Wilbraham, MA. Cherished grandfather of Jenna Morin and husband David, Nicholas Charles and his husband Arthur, Paul Cacciola and fiancé Jordan Zarcone and Jamie Paolino. Loving brother of Ann Gaeta and Daniel Cacciola and wife Nancy. Dear brother-in-law of Joseph DeLuca, his companion Marie and his family.
Agatino was a US Air Force Veteran of the Korean War. He was a barber at West Point Military Academy for over 27 years. He was also a member of the Goshen Gremlins, a radio-controlled airplane club, and the Sons of Italy in Blauvelt.

Thomas J. Wentland

  Thomas Joseph Wentland passed away October 17 at the Bronx VA hospital. He was born to Cyril F. Wentland and Pauline E. Sawinski at Nyack Hospital on July 28, 1949.      He was a life long resident of Rockland County, having lived in Camp Shanks, Nanuet and Palisades. He attended Nanuet public schools and graduated in 1967. Tommy was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Germany and Vietnam with the artillery unit from 1969-1971.    He was a mechanical “super genius” who spent countless hours toiling away at carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and classic car connoisseur. He will always be remembered for his dedicated service and volunteer work with the John M. Perry Post and the Northvale V.F.W..     Thomas is predeceased by his mother Pauline “Pearl”, father Cyril “Cy” and his sister Cynthia “Cindy”. He is survived by his longtime companion Muriel “Mickey” McDonald, daughter Kari, son Matthew, step-daughters, Jude Navarro and Deborah Castro, “Poppy’ of Jessica, Ryan, Eric and Thomas, brothers Bobby and Wally, sister in law Suzanne, uncle Sonny Ostrom and an extensive amount of nieces, nephews, extended family and loyal friends.     Services to be held at Pizzi Funeral Home, Northvale, N.J. On Friday October 20 from 5-7:30 pm with a funeral service at 7:30. Burial at Rockland Cemetery on Saturday October 28. A celebration of his life will follow burial next Saturday at the John M. Perry Post in Sparkill, N.Y.
