Joseph A. D’Urso

Joseph A. D’Urso, 87, of Tappan, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2019. Beloved husband of the late Gloria (nee Mazzella). Loving father of Theresa Albanese and husband Daniel, Joanne Gove and husband Douglas and Joseph D’Urso and wife Lisa. Proud grandfather of Danielle, Michael, Guthrie and Remi. Dearest brother of Sebastian D’Urso and Rita DiBrino.

Joseph was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He retired from Sloans Supermarket in NYC after 40 years where he was manager of the meat department. Joe was a life member of the Tappan Fire Department and belonged to the Carl A. Schelin American Legion Post 1271, Tappan.

Joe had a great love of life and left lasting good impressions on many. Simply said, his presence in this world made it a better place to be.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday 10 AM at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart RC Church, Tappan with interment to follow at Tappan Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday from 2 PM to 9 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050).

Richard A. Cancro

Richard Cancro, 91, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019 in Norwood, NJ peacefully in his sleep. Richard was born May 29, 1928 to Francesco and Maria (Mastandrea) Cancro in New York, New York, the youngest of 5 children. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1946.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1950-1952. He married Dorothy (Mincieli) Cancro, in 1952 in New York.

A 55-year resident of Norwood, NJ, Richard spent his career as a lithographer, but his overwhelming focus was his devotion to his wife and three sons.  A lifelong Yankees fan and dog lover, he volunteered to train dogs for The Seeing Eye.  His favorite dog that he trained, Cachet, placed first in several dog obedience competitions.

Richard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy, and their three sons, Nicholas and his wife JoAnn of Rye, NY, Richard and his wife Susan of Closter, NJ, and Thomas, of Cos Cob, CT.  He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Julia, Richard, and Mathew, who brought him immeasurable joy.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, Norwood. Burial will follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY. Visiting hours are 2-4 PM on Sunday, November 3, 2019 at Pizzi Funeral Home, Northvale.

James J. Nachstein

James J. Nachstein, 92, of Pearl River, NY, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2019. Beloved husband of the late Evelyn. Loving father of James G. Nachstein and wife Marie of Nanuet, NY, Annamarie Nachstein of Hopewell Junction, NY and Andrea Collins and husband Stephen of Stony Point, NY. Cherished grandfather of Jennifer Carlsen and husband David and Kristen Kruithof and husband Brian. Proud great-grandfather of Elizabeth, Andrew, Brenna, Jocelyn and Ellie. Dear brother of George, Robert, and Joseph.

Jim was a US Army Veteran of WWII.  He served for the Port Authority Police Department of NY/NJ achieving the rank of Chief Inspector

Angel M. Ramos

Angel M. Ramos, 95, of Orangeburg, NY, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, October 26, 2019.  Beloved husband of Anna (nee Nazario). Loving father of Sr. Brunilda Ramos of Mantoloking, NJ and Gladys Amin of Orangeburg, NY. Proud grandfather of Sharif Amin and Jennifer Amin (Nash) and great-grandfather of Soluna and Elias. Dearest brother of eleven brothers and sisters.

Angel was a US Army WWII Veteran. He owned a grocery store in NYC for many years before retiring. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed.

William R. Evans

William R. Evans, 94, of Harrington Park, passed away on October 24, 2019. Born February 19, 1925 in Paterson, he lived in Norwood and Harrington Park for over 55 years. 

Bill was the devoted husband of Marie (nee Cerimido) for almost 69 years; loving father to his children and their spouses: Tom and Nora, Roy and Deb, David, Melissa and Roger. He adored his grandchildren: Colin, Elliot, Brian, Katie, Lauren, Ross and Mallory and equally their spouses: Lydia, Laura, Brittany, David, Brent and Akvile. One of his grandsons, Kyle, predeceased him and we know they are now reunited and laughing together. Finally, he was lucky to have and enjoy 5 great-grandchildren: Elias, Kayla, Quinn, Tessa and Casey.

Bill was a US Navy Veteran of WWII.  He was a proud graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken. He had a very successful career in engineering and management for Coca-Cola Enterprises. He was active in the Church of the Holy Communion for almost 60 years, serving in various capacities. 

Visitation will be Sunday 2-5 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050). A Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10:30 AM at The Church of the Holy Communion, Norwood.

Antoinette Hogle

Antoinette Hogle (nee Bianca), 88,  of Norwood, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019. Beloved wife of the late James B. Hogle, Jr. Loving mother of Laura DaSilva and husband Gary of Dumont and James B. Hogle, III and wife Christine of Sparta. Proud grandmother of Angelo, Gary Joseph, Olivia and James IV. Beloved sister of the late Anthony Bianca. Dearest aunt of Kathy Kuhlwein, Anthony Bianca and Karla Schilling.

Antoinette was a nurse at Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood for many years and remained close with many of her coworkers. She also enjoyed being a member of the Norwood Senior Center.

John P. Ascolese

John P. Ascolese, 80, of Northvale, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019. Born January 22, 1939 in Jersey City, he was raised in Hoboken until 8 months old when his family moved to Norwood. Graduate of Tenafly High School, Class of 1957.

Devoted husband of 59 years to Laura (nee Cosseta). Loving father of Laura Scilingo and husband Dr. Ciro Scilingo and Claire Schmidt and husband Gary. Proud grandfather of Nick and fiancé Kristen, Paul, Christina and fiancé Justin and Jillian. Dear brother of Millie Logan, Joseph Ascolese and the late Anne Tiner. He is also survived by many loving relatives and friends.

John worked at Jackson Metal Company in Hoboken for 28 years before opening his own business, John Ascolese Scrap Metal from 1985 to 2013. He loved his work, was funny, loving and generous to his family; he enjoyed good food, Friday poker nights and trips to AC with friends.

Joseph DeStefano, 70, of Tappan, NY, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 9, 2019. He was born in the Bronx to the late Joseph and Mary DeStefano. Beloved husband of Kathleen (nee Cusack). Proud father of Daniel, Joseph and his fiancée Tina, and Robert. Loving brother of Peter DeStefano and wife Dorothy and the late Fausta and Louis Pagnotta, Mildred and Alfonso Prisco, Michael, Marie and Dorothy. Pauline Piazza

Pauline Piazza (nee Russo), 96, of Northvale for 53 years, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Fonti. Loving mother Robert and his late wife Monica, Tim and wife Mary, Paulette Scatassa and husband Joseph, Ronald, Christopher and wife Cheryl, Gerard and Daniel. Cherished grandmother of 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Dear sister of the late Peter Russo and Nick Russo.

Pauline is also survived by her beloved dog, Baci.

Pauline was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church, a member of the Northvale Golden Agers and the Senior Center. She belonged to a Bonsai Club and enjoyed doll making, gardening and arts and crafts.
