Mildred J. Vero

Mildred J. Vero (nee Pellicano), 96, of Blauvelt, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Jack for 62 years. Cherished mother of Dr. Fedele Vero and wife Mary Beth of Blauvelt, Anna Vero of Tappan and Tony Vero and wife Bernadette of Palisades. Adored grandmother of Jack, Grace, Laura, Maria and Faith. Dearest sister of the late Mary, Dominick, Pasquale and Theresa.

Mildred was a devoted parishioner of St. Catharine of Alexandria RC Church in Blauvelt. Mildred loved children and was a teacher’s aide for the Orangetown School System for many years.

Nicholas Paul Pappas

Nicholas Paul Pappas, 82, of Old Tappan, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018. Beloved husband of Carmela (nee DiPietro) for 60 years. Cherished father of Mark Pappas of Old Tappan, Nicole Cortright and husband Patrick of Orangeburg, NY and Kristine Karanikitas and husband Lukas of Northvale. Adored grandfather of Nicholas, Courtney, Alexander, Gavin and Lilly Anna. Dearest brother of the late John, Thomas and Eugene.

 

Nick was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Oradell, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the past President of the Republican Club of Old Tappan, a former councilman for the borough of Old Tappan, a Zoning Officer for the borough of Old Tappan and had been a member of the planning board of Old Tappan. In his youth he enjoyed being member of the Road Knights, a New York City Drag Racing Club and was known as the “Hotrod Greek”.

Nick owned many successful companies. The list includes Valley Paving Company, Soilcrete Company, Discount Tires of Paramus, United Sand and Aggregate Company, Automated Metering Company, NP Electric, Empire Stone Products, Video 4, three gas stations on route 17, and N & C Construction. Nick built more than 20 beautiful homes in Old Tappan.

He was known by family and friends as a gentleman who could accomplish anything he would set his mind to and would be there in a moment at any time if you needed help.  Everyone who was a part of his happy and full life remembers his jokes, quick wit and stories of his younger days. He always wanted to make you laugh.

 

A service will be held Wednesday at 11:30 AM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050) with interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Visiting hours are Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM.

Arlene M. Sposa

Arlene M. Sposa (nee Rube), 86, of Norwood, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of the late William A. Sposa, Sr. Cherished mother of William A., Jr. and wife Candace of Norwood and Ellen Sposa-Morin and husband Jeffrey of Ashburn, VA. Adored grandmother of Emily and Kate. Dearest aunt of Jane Fallon and Clare Kaberle. Also survived by her dedicated caregiver Fendy as well as many loving family members and friends.

Arlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Before raising her family she had worked in a law office in NYC.

Olive Crowther Dyckman

Olive Crowther Dyckman, born in Springfield, MA, formerly of Dumont, Closter, Coco Beach, FL  and Midlothian, VA, passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2018, she was 102 years old. Beloved wife of the late Thomas. Loving mother of Linda Marco and husband Michael of Northvale and Judith Mohoney of HI. Cherished grandmother of four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Dearest sister of Carolyn Lynch and the late Muriel, Carl and Norman.

Charles Sofield

Charles Raymond Sofield, 93, of Pearl River, passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Lois (nee Ohler). Cherished father of Stuart Sofield of San Francisco, CA, Andrea Lagos and husband George of Turnersville, NJ and the late Heather Matesevac and Holly Sofield. Adored grandfather of Michael, Charlie, Tim, Cristian and Danny. Dearest brother of the late Irene Sofield and Kay Youmans.

Charles was a US Navy veteran of WWII. He retired from Lederle Labs where he was a biochemist. For over 20 years, he was a member of the Pearl River Ambulance Corps and taught First Aid to hundreds of people, including the Police and Fire departments of Rockland County. He loved to garden, travel with his wife, sing in the church choir which he did up until he was 90 & he loved to run. He ran half & full marathons up until the age of 75.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Pearl River United Methodist Church on Saturday at 8:30 Am with interment to follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill. Visiting hours are Thursday 5-8 PM and Friday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale (201-767-3050).

Catherine MacKenzie

Catherine MacKenzie (nee Cervoni), 87, of Tappan and Stuart, FL, passed away at home on Thursday, October 25, 2018. Beloved wife of Donald F. MacKenzie for 67 years. Cherished mother of Donald Jr. and wife Lorrie of New City, John and wife Lorraine of Blauvelt, Debra Monaco and husband Lloyd of W. Nyack, Joyce MacKenzie of Seneca, SC, Karen Bell and husband Peter of Tappan and Kathleen Jo and husband John Maloney of Orangeburg. Adored grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of 9. Dearest sister of the late Joseph, Dr. Dominic and Fr. Stephen Cervoni. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Joseph and Mandalena (née Rakela) Cervoni.

Catherine was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and nannie and her family was her life. Besides providing a loving home to her family, she enjoyed her part-time job at Sears in Nanuet where she worked for many years. In Stuart, FL she was a member of the Columbiettes.

Patricia Ann Furletti

Patricia Ann Furletti (nee Magliano), 71, of Riverview FL, formerly of New Milford, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018. Beloved wife of Louis for 51 years. Cherished mother of Rick and wife Amanda of Montvale and Scott and wife Dawn of Northvale. Adored grandmother of Thomas, Joey, Dante, Shannon, Faith and Nico. Dearest sister of John Magliano. She was predeceased by her sister, Linda Carusso and parents, John and Lillian Magliano.

 

Patricia was a graduate of Cliffside Park High School and belonged to the National Honor Society. Before retiring to Florida she had been a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph’s RC Church in Oradell. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Hillsdale for over 20 years.

Joseph M. Torres

Joseph M. Torres, 75, of Northvale, formerly of Upper Saddle River, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018. He was the cherished son of Aurea and the late Manuel Torres. Devoted father of Lisa Harden and husband Burt of Northvale, Adriane Duffy and husband Jack of Montvale and Joseph Torres of Long Island. Dearest brother of Hector Torres and his partner Karen Drazin of Baltimore, MD. Adored grandfather (Pop-Pop) of Bryan, Daniel, Morgan, John, Tyler and Erin.

Joseph was a mortgage banker and the owner of JMT Consulting. Prior to that he founded First Residential Mortgage in Passaic and then Residential Home Funding in Ramsey.  In 2004, he was actively involved in creating a high school reunion for his beloved Morris High School in the Bronx.  He was a devoted Yankees fan and enjoyed reading, golfing, traveling and going to the beach.  He enjoyed watching episodes of Seinfeld.  He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and watching their sports activities.

Gregory J. Bozdech

Gregory J. Bozdech 54 of League City, Texas, formally of Norwood, NJ passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2018. Beloved husband of Lori (nee D’Agostaro) and loving father to Joseph Frank. Greg was born on September 11, 1963 to Lillian (nee Stubits) and Joseph C. Bozdech (deceased). Beloved brother to MaryLee and Michael McGoorty, Mark Bozdech, and Jody and Peter Calabrese, Jr. Son-in-law to Lauretta and Frank (deceased) D’Agostaro, and brother-in-law to Louis and Cheryl D’Agostaro. Also, survived by his nieces and nephews, along with many loving relatives and friends.

 

Gregory grew up in Norwood, NJ where he was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church and served as an altar boy. Greg attended Immaculate Conception School, where he played basketball and was a Boy Scout. Greg also attended St. Joseph’s Regional High School and later he received a degree in Dairy Husbandry at Delaware Valley College.

 

As a teenager, Greg began his career as a volunteer in the Norwood Ambulance Corp and the Norwood Fire Company #1. Greg also worked at the A&P in both Norwood and RiverVale, NJ.

 

Greg moved to League City, Texas and began to volunteer at the League City Fire Department in 1997. Greg started working for the City of Pearland and in 2007 became the Deputy Fire Marshal. Later that year, he accepted a full time Deputy Marshal position, which he held until his promotion in April 2016 to head Fire Marshal. Greg was instrumental in implementing Pearland’s Accelerant Canine Program and was the handler for the first canine team with his beloved partner, Buddy. Greg held many advanced certifications as a Structure Firefighter, Fire Inspector, Fire and Arson Investigator, Fire Service Instructor III and Fire Officer II. He was also a licensed Peace Officer and Certified Emergency Medical Technician.
