John Vincent Skarzenski, 61, of Harrington Park, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Loving father of Aaron Skarzenski of Malvern, PA. Cherished son of John and Jean Skarzenski of Harrington Park. Dearest brother of Janice Mierzwa and husband Roger of Morris Plains, Carol de Lyon and husband Bruce of Dumont and the late Steven Skarzenski. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Laurie Summer, many nieces and nephews and his beloved cat, Violet.

Margaret Ascatigno

Margaret Ascatigno (nee Soldano), 86, of Orangeburg, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Joseph. Cherished mother of Frances Jacobellis and husband Charles of Tappan, Joseph Ascatigno and his partner Thaiani of Old Tappan and Dorothy LoTurco and husband Michael of Nanuet. Adored grandmother of Kim (Dominic), Daria (Edward), Allyse (Ray), Gina (Nick), Joey, Michael and Danielle and great-grandmother of Giavanna, Gabriella, Luca and Vittoria. Dearest sister of the late Anthony Soldano, Peter Soldano and Frances Spadaccini. Also survived by many cherished relatives and friends.

Besides being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Margie was a dedicated parishioner of St. Catharine’s Church, Blauvelt and was a member of the Orangetown Senior Center and the Romanesque Lodge in Blauvelt.

Giulia S. Rossovich

Giulia S. Rossovich (nee Strazzari), 92, of Tenafly, formerly of Weehawken, passed away on Monday, March 12, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Nadan. Loving mother of Aurelia Czekalski and husband Martin of Northborough, MA, Giorgio Rossovich and wife Marina Micheli of NYC and Nada Barzelatto and husband Chris of Northvale. Adored grandmother of Michael, Bobby, Mia and the late Steven. Dearest sister of Bruno, Aurora and the late Silvano and Giorgio.

Giulia was an office manager for Morningside Group of Anesthesiology in NYC for over 22 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Everett Homberg

Everett Homberg, 71, of Northvale, formerly of Old Tappan, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018. Beloved husband of Diane (nee Larrere). Loving father of Michelle Homberg and partner Joseph Merrill of Northvale and Brett Homberg and wife Lindsey of Montvale. Cherished grandfather of Evan and Madelyn. Dearest brother of Glenn and Suzanne Homberg of Congers, NY and uncle of Matthew and Jaclyn.

Everett was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from UPS after over 30 years of service. He was also a member of the Norwood American Legion. His many talents included being able to fix nearly anything, and the unique ability to simultaneously love and hate the NY Rangers. He enjoyed working on his classic car and collected numerous car show awards. He traveled roads near and far on his Harley with many friends, his passion for adventure will be carried on by loved ones.

Fannie Sadie Staropoli

Fannie Sadie Staropoli (nee Mangano), 92, of Northvale, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Predeceased by her beloved husband Frank in 1996. She was the loving mother of six children. Her four sons, Matthew and his wife Bruni of Nanuet, Mark and his wife Paula formerly of Blauvelt, Frank and his wife Jeanne of Montvale, and Ralph of Colorado; and her two daughters Victoria Corey and her late beloved husband David Wolf of Florida, and Annette and Vincent St. Angelo of Northvale. Adored grandmother of eleven grandchildren: Jeremy and his wife Simone, Noah, James and his fiancée Scarlyn, Michael and his wife Whitney, Megan, Stephen, Amy, Alyssa, Krista, Nicholas and Alexis-Maree and great-grandmother of dear 3-year old Jackson. She is also survived by her son Matthew’s 3 step-children, Jenelle, Charles Anthony and Shawn, along with his 8 step-grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren. Dearest sister of John, and the late Vincent and Frank Mangano. Dearest sister-in-law of the late Pauline, Ruth and Marie Mangano, Connie Schaefer, Gene & Josie Mahanay & Matthew & Anne Staropoli.

 

Fannie grew up during the depression and left high school to help support her family. She started in the garment district in Manhattan at C. Love & Becker as a seamstress sewing piecework and eventually worked her way up to making wedding gowns. During her late teens and twenties she enjoyed having fun with her friends dancing away at the Copacabana; seeing such acts perform, such as Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, and also appreciated the music of many famous operas of her time such as La Traviata and Madame Butterfly. Once married to Frank, she started raising her family in Valley Stream, NY. In 1962 they moved to Northvale. She took in sewing work to help her family and her last employment was at Simon & Schuster/Pearson Publishing in Old Tappan. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church, Northvale.

 

Fannie enjoyed traveling not only with her dear friends from the Senior Center in Northvale, but as well as, Club 60 in Harrington Park. Her most cherished vacations were traveling to visit her children and trips with her family, most especially to Alaska and her mother’s home town of Taormina, Italy, where she was able to meet up unexpectedly with a relative in the short time spent visiting while on a cruise.   Her hobbies included gardening and movie-going. She enjoyed traveling to Massachusetts with her husband and family to watch her sons play soccer in college, cooking for their teams and also cooking and spending time during the holidays with her entire family.

Guenther Grossmann

Guenther Grossmann, 79, of West Orange, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Karin (nee Frauendorf). Loving father of Kim Macchia and husband Mark of Dumont. Adored grandfather of Karina and Nicholas. Dearest brother of the late Walter, Helmut and Hildegard.

Guenther was a machinist for Franklin Miller in Livingston for many years. He also owned Grossmann’s Deli in West Orange in the 70’s. He was a member of Deutscher Club of Clark and the Elizabeth Sport Club.

Matthew J. Staropoli

Matthew J. Staropoli, 92, of Northvale, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2018. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Anna, sons, Philip and Matthew, sisters, Josephine Mahanay and Connie Alasio and brother, Frank. Devoted father of Roseann Vetter and partner Douglas Wingerath of Westwood, Frances Friend and husband Rodolfo of Torrance, CA and Paul and wife Tina of Northvale. Loving father-in-law of Sandra and Kia Lynn. Adored grandfather of Kristen and husband Brian, Mark, Sarah, Keith, John, Ryan and husband Steve, Samantha and husband Matthew, Danielle, Felicia, Jennifer, Michael, and Thomas and great-grandfather of Justin, Victoria, Izzabella, Gabriella and Maria. He is also survived by many other dear relatives and friends.

Matthew was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. He owned and operated Flag TV in the Bronx for over 25 years before retiring and becoming very active in the Northvale Senior Center and Golden Agers as well as the “mayor” of Franklin Heights Senior Housing, where he was always willing to lend a hand. Matt was a founding member of the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association in Nyack and was an avid bowler.

Theresa Timpanaro, 50, of Northvale, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Donald. Devoted mother of Nicole, Anthony and Louis. Cherished daughter of Margaret and the late Anthony Maglione of Tappan. Loving sister of Anthony Maglione and wife Ivonne of the Bronx and Rita Morea and husband Richard of Norwood. Dearest daughter-in-law of Patricia and the late Louis Timpanaro and sister-in-law of Louis and Ann Margaret Timpanaro and Kelly and Michael Gulevski. Beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Theresa devoted her life to her family, especially her children. Always upbeat and with a smile, she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She worked at Pearson in Old Tappan for many years.

Maria Libera Venezia

Maria Libera Venezia (nee Matera), 82, of Emerson, formerly of Northvale, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 22, 2018.

She was born in Italy on Sept. 6, 1935, and came to the United States at age 13. She started work as an embroidery seamstress, then became a master craftswoman of custom window treatments. Most of all, she was devoted to all things related to her family. Her gifted hands cooked, sewed, crocheted, and made floral arrangements. She volunteered for schools and churches, and was a member of the Northvale Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary in the 1970s.

She was a parishioner at St. Andrew’s R.C. Church in Westwood, and formerly of St. Anthony’s R.C. Church in Northvale. She held deep devotion to the Rosary and Mary, and attended Mass almost every day.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Rocco; her cherished children, Joyce Venezia Suss and husband Sherwin; Lisa Venezia Thomas and husband Charles; and Anthony Venezia; her treasured grandchildren, Jacqueline (Robert), Jeanette (Matthew), Rebecca, Mollie, Nicholas, and Elizabeth; her brothers, Gennaro, Biagio, and Joseph; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Pasqualina Gramuglia, and her parents, Cristina and Nicola Matera.

Vincent J. Gulfo, 86, of Blauvelt, NY, formerly of Haworth, NJ, and Brooklyn, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Betty (nee Clementi). Loving father of Mary Keagul and wife Kathleen of Eastham, MA, Vincent Gulfo and wife Mary of Warwick, NY, Elizabeth Gulfo of Harrington Park, NJ and Joseph Gulfo and wife Adele of NYC. Adored grandfather of Kathryn and husband Josh, John and wife Megan, Christopher and wife Michelle, Laura, Emily, Michelle and Natalie. Cherished great-grandfather of Linus and Christopher, Jr. Dearest brother of Mary Simone and the late Josephine, Rose, Lucille, Ann and Camille and brother-in-law of Joseph Clementi and the late Phyllis Nocero. Beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Vincent was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved God, his family and his country, proudly serving in the USMC during the Korean War. He worked for National Hanover Press in NYC before retiring. A man of deep faith, he was a parishioner of St. Ephrem’s Church in Brooklyn and Sacred Heart in Haworth, serving both parishes as religious education teacher and lector.
